While in the past egg freezing was done for medical reasons, today it is a solution for all women who want to preserve their fertility and have children when they want, without the stress of age.

What is egg freezing?

It is a procedure in which the ovaries are stimulated with hormones in order to produce multiple eggs, which are retrieved and transported to the laboratory to be frozen at -196 degrees Celsius. Ovarian stimulation is done as in classic in vitro fertilization, that is, by taking hormones via subcutaneous injections for 12 days. 
The eggs that are created are taken with mild intoxication and frozen on the same day using the vitrification method, which ensures that they will not break due to the cold, since they are mostly composed of water. With this method, the survival rate of the eggs is greater than 90%, while they are preserved unchanged over time.

In what cases is it chosen by women?

The reasons for freezing eggs vary. Many women freeze eggs because they currently suffer from a disease that prevents them from having children, while other women resort to freezing eggs for social reasons, postponing childbearing for another "phase of life."

At what age should it be done?

Although due to scientific advances, the time horizon has expanded greatly, "saving" an egg from a younger age – ideally before 38, when mutations begin in women's genetic material – presents comparative advantages.

How much does the whole process cost?

For example, the cost of the ovarian stimulation procedure, as well as the egg retrieval and initial freezing, is estimated to reach up to 3,000 euros, including the relevant medication. Then, each year there is a fee, around 100 euros per year, for the cost of freezing.
