Myths and truths about periods

It concerns us every month. And yet, we avoid talking about it. For many, it's taboo. It shouldn't be.
Periods are a sign of health and fertility. Many myths accompany them. Let's try to restore the truths behind them.
Myth 1: "It's not good to shower during the first few days of your period."
The truth: You can bathe normally during your period. Frequent local washing, regular changes of sanitary napkins and adherence to all hygiene rules that protect the body from possible infections are anything but to be avoided. Hot baths can also provide relief from possible pain during your period.
Myth 2: "My mom had heavy periods, the same will happen to me."
The truth: Every body is unique. Your mother's period patterns mean absolutely nothing to you. However, if you have severe pain, it's important to let your gynecologist know, as there may be a reason for your period being heavy, such as polycystic ovaries or endometriosis. Proper diagnosis and treatment will make you feel better.
Myth 3: "I lose a lot of blood during my period."
The truth: On average, women lose 30-40 ml of blood (3-4 tablespoons) during their period. About 30% of women complain of heavy bleeding during their period. In fact, only 10% experience heavy blood loss, which can be characterized as menorrhagia. If, in addition to heavy blood loss, you notice fatigue, weakness, dizziness or heart palpitations, it is a good idea to inform your gynecologist.
Myth 4: "Period blood smells and people around me know I'm on my period."
The truth: While each of us has our own unique smell, period blood doesn't actually smell. No, the people next to you in yoga class can't tell if you're on your period. Just ask yourself if you've ever concluded that a woman is on her period from her smell. Practice good hygiene, change your pads regularly, and you have no reason to worry.
Myth 5: "Regular sanitary napkins are not responsible for the discomfort I feel during my period, such as itching and irritation."
The truth: A regular sanitary napkin is bleached with chlorine and contains chemicals that include pesticide residues, dioxins, and other ingredients that are harmful to the female body. All of these toxic chemicals are absorbed by the vaginal tissue, putting the reproductive system and the female body at risk. The synthetic materials and fragrances they contain cause allergies, irritation, yeast infections, and other vaginitis.
