What is mycosis?

Thrush is caused by a yeast called Candida. It can live in the mouth, skin, intestines, and vagina without causing any problems. But sometimes vaginal yeast can grow large enough to invade vaginal tissue and cause a yeast infection.

Why do you get it?

Is it transmitted through sex?

Yeast infection is not considered a sexually transmitted disease - someone can develop it without ever having had sexual intercourse - but recent or frequent intercourse increases the chances of developing it.

How is it treated?

Yeast infection is usually treated with intravaginal suppositories or creams.

After treatment begins, symptoms may persist for a few days. Wear cotton, comfortable underwear that allows the area to breathe. It is good to know that intravaginal creams may reduce the effectiveness of latex condoms.
