How does your period change as you get older and what should you pay attention to at each age?

From puberty to menopause , a woman's cycle changes several times, affecting both her period itself and the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. As our bodies grow, our periods change in volume and duration, and so in each decade of our lives we must observe the relevant changes , in order to point out any signs that something is wrong.

No one can ever predict exactly when and how our periods will change, however the following symptoms commonly appear in the following decades of a woman's life:

From the first period to 20 years:

On average in Western countries, menstruation occurs around the age of 12 to 15. In the early years, a woman's cycle is irregular, with periods lasting as little as 10 days, and young girls often do not ovulate every month. Usually, within 2 to 3 years of menstruation, the cycle stabilizes and a woman now experiences the usual symptoms before, after, and during her period.

What we should pay attention to: The ingredients of the pads, tampons, and other menstrual products we use, always reading their packaging, as well as any significant changes in menstrual symptoms, such as flow, which may conceal a health problem for which specialist care is necessary.

From 20 to 30:

The stabilization of the cycle is the characteristic of this decade, however factors such as stress, excessive fatigue, poor diet, etc. can affect a woman's period, causing, among other things, dysmenorrhea .

What we should pay attention to: In addition to the menstrual products we use, we should always choose the appropriate method of contraception for us, as well as not neglecting appropriate protection against sexually transmitted diseases.

From 30 to 40:

In this age range, a woman's cycle is usually stable , except when she gives birth , in which case her period is likely to change in various ways, especially in terms of flow, duration, and pain. Symptoms such as heavy flow and unbearable cramps may be hiding a problem such as fibroids or endometriosis .

What to watch out for: Perimenopause usually begins shortly before age 40, a period that can last up to a decade. Gradually, the body produces less estrogen and progesterone, resulting in hot flashes, sudden mood swings, and dry skin.

From 40 to 50:

Gradually, the female cycle becomes irregular, bleeding decreases, and sometimes the period stops for a few months and then reappears. Usually around the age of 50, and in some cases in the middle of this decade, the woman enters menopause.

What to watch out for: A woman is officially in menopause when 12 consecutive months have passed without having a period, therefore any bleeding after this period should lead to a visit to the gynecologist's office for further examination.

Whatever your age, remember that every woman’s cycle is different and there is no “normal” or “abnormal” period compared to other women, only in relation to your own body. By observing each cycle, you will be able to identify any changes in your body and take care of it as it deserves.
