Period: Explaining the basics... to men

50 years ago, no one dared to talk publicly about sex , let alone menstruation . The female period is still taboo today , even though it is a human function without which there would be no life on the planet. A large percentage of men around the world know almost nothing about how the female body works, what exactly menstruation is, what effects it has on the female body and - most importantly - why our world would be better if we had this knowledge from an early age. So below is some basic knowledge.

1. There are over 5,000 euphemisms for menstruation worldwide . In all countries of the world, in all languages, the taboo around menstruation has created thousands of different ways to avoid referring to it as “menstruation,” but to use - for no reason - alternative expressions such as “the Russians came” (“Marushka, the Evian”). Of course, the use of these euphemisms maintains the taboo around menstruation and any issue related to it.

2. Periods are the natural process by which a woman's body naturally expels an unfertilized egg, which is associated with a number of other physical and psychological symptoms . Yes, when we're expecting or on our period, we sometimes want to eat an entire refrigerator (including the shelves), sometimes we cry because we accidentally broke a glass or stepped on an ant, and we're generally more irritable, moody, or grumpy - which is normal, considering that we're continuing to do what we were doing, only this time we're bleeding at the same time.

3. The menstrual cycle is different for every woman and can range from 21 to 35 days. The 28-day cycle is simply a myth. Sometimes our period comes when we least expect it, while other times it is very late (without being pregnant), which makes our mood even worse, while making all our activities difficult, even though we continue to do them normally.

4. The flow of blood is usually heavier in the first few days of the period and usually lasts from 3 to 7 days. Depending on the flow, each woman uses different sizes of pads or tampons. Of course, this, like many other things about women's periods, was once unknown even to NASA , since as recently as 1983, when astronaut Sally Ride was preparing to leave on a space mission, those responsible for her trip asked her "if 100 tampons a week would be enough for her."

5. Of course, the same people responsible wouldn't even know that a box of conventional sanitary napkins contains almost 40 grams of plastic, that is, almost 5 plastic bags, which means that a woman must take care of herself by choosing sanitary napkins and tampons without plastic and other harmful substances, if she doesn't want to be exposed to hundreds of kilograms of petroleum derivatives in all the decades she will have her period (which can be many). Flower Organic sanitary napkins and pads are made of 100% certified organic cotton, without a trace of plastic, combining absorbency , comfort and absolute protection from irritations, allergies, fungal infections and other types of infections.

6. No woman has the same period as another. Some have more pain in their abdomen, have headaches or migraines, sometimes they feel dizzy and nauseous, and often feel physically tired as if they have completed a long workout in a sport, but without the feeling of joy that sports leave you with. Also, some women even need to stay in bed for one or more days before and during their period, while on cold winter days, due to a lack of vitamin D, the pain may be more intense. “How intense?” you will ask, if you have read this far. Answer: in some cases, the pain can be as intense as the pain of a heart attack.

7. Premenstrual syndrome or simply PMS is the set of symptoms of bad mood, pain, bloating, breast tenderness, etc. that appear in a woman before her period. No woman has the same PMS as another . Often when you see us behaving more strangely than usual, more “aggressive”, we may have PMS , which is caused by fluctuations in our hormones. There is no need to point out to us in a derogatory way that we are waiting for a period, we already know it and we are having a hard time even before it comes.

8. Periods don't "attract" sharks to us. Nor do bears or other wild animals. In general, periods don't prohibit us from continuing what we did when we weren't (e.g. we can even swim in the sea, which temporarily stops the flow of blood). Okay, there are worse myths about periods, e.g. in the Middle Ages they believed that conceiving during menstruation meant that a baby would be born with red hair - and that's not even the most serious mistake in this sentence.

9. “ Period poverty” is a problem faced by women in every country on the planet. A large percentage of girls and women do not have sufficient income to purchase sanitary pads or tampons, resulting in almost 50% of the world’s female population having missed at least one day of school due to their periods.

10. There is no shame in buying us pads, pills, or anything else we might need during our period and we can't leave the house or office to get it ourselves. We want you to know how our bodies work and to discuss together everything that concerns us about our periods, as this way our lives will all become better and taboos will stop holding us back for decades. If you want it too, we will make it happen together.
